What We Do

Welcome to the City of Ecorse Department of Planning and Zoning. The Planning and Zoning Department is responsible for the overall administration of the Zoning Ordinance and for coordinating the implementation of the Zoning Ordinance among the City boards and commissions, staff, enforcement officials, city consultants, applicants, and the general public.

Application Review
The Planning and Zoning Department is the first stop for residents and developers looking to modify property in the City. We review site plan, special land use, planned unit development (PUD), zoning variance, and re-zoning applications. Additionally, we review landscape plans (as a component of site plan applications) and provide guidance on lot line revisions when requested. Lastly, we evaluate complaints regarding damage to trees designated for preservation. If you would like to apply for a review by our department, please refer to the “Applications and Forms for Development Review” button on the left, which includes further application information and the standard fee schedule.

Master Planning
The Planning and Zoning Department also provides information on the City Master Plan, which is a guide for the future of land use, development, transportation, zoning, housing, and public facilities and services throughout Ecorse. The Master Plan is used to evaluate development proposals, City projects, and policies to ensure that Ecorse is making progress toward the future envisioned by residents. For more information, visit the “Master Plan” button on the left.

Other Planning Initiatives
The Planning and Zoning Department provides guidance on ongoing local, regional, and state planning initiatives that impact life in Ecorse. For more information, visit the “Other Planning Initiatives” tab on the left.

Zoning
The Planning and Zoning department provides services to any person wishing to discuss the Zoning Ordinance, which was updated in July of 2020. The Ordinance is available in-person at the clerks office, or you can access it online here: Ecorse Zoning Ordinance. Please note that the online Code of Ordinances Appendix A (Zoning) has not yet been updated to reflect the new ordinance.
